Where does radon occur?
Austria has one of the highest radon levels in the world. This is due to the properties of the subsoil, in particular the composition and permeability of the soil. Elevated indoor radon levels can occur anywhere in Austria. This is because the radon concentration indoors also depends on the condition of the building, in particular the impermeability of the building to the subsoil. There are areas in Austria where an above-average number of buildings have high radon levels.
Radon protection areas and radon precautionary areas
Based on more than 50,000 radon measurements in buildings, radon protection areas and radon precautionary areas have been defined in the Radon Protection Ordinance (RnV). The interactive radon map shows in which area a municipality is located.
In radon protection areas, measures to protect the health of employees are mandatory, in particular the measurement of radon at workplaces on the ground floor and in basements. You can find more information on this at Information for employers.
In radon precautionary areas, preventive radon protection measures must be provided for all new buildings. You can find further information on this under Precautionary measures.
